Max Lowe

Max Lowe has been exploring the far reaches of the planet since before he could walk; from his home in the mountains of Montana, to Antarctica, Nepal and the peak of Denali. The extraordinary wildlife, natural landscapes and foreign cultures and people he’s found along the way have inspired him to pick up a camera and a pen to capture those moments. Currently, Max is an independent photographer, writer and filmmaker based in Bozeman, Montana.

Q&A

How did you get into photography? Is there anyone who inspired you to follow that path?

I got into photography through a camera probably like most all photographers. My mother gave me her old Canon Rebel film camera when I went on a trip to hike the Inca Trail with a group of other teens. I learned how to develop film and work in the dark room in high school and I think that’s where I fell in love with making imagery. Seeing things come out of the developer and turn into an image really illustrates the magic of capturing the world around us in a different light. I would say my mom really inspired me to chase this artistic path since she has worked as an artist and freelance creative most of her life.

What are your favorite subjects to photograph?

I think my favorite subjects to photograph are the ones where I can interact with the environment fluidly. Being a part of the story you’re capturing gives you the impetus and ability to capture the true face of whatever you’re shooting.

What has been your most memorable moment so far?

I think my most memorable moment in my work so far as been being on Everest working with National Geographic during the 2012 season. That spring I was working as a waiter and then went traveling with friends in India. While abroad I received a grant from National Geographic, and went on to work on that for 2 months in Nepal. After I finished my grant work, I was asked to come back and join the NG Everest Expedition for another 4 weeks of work with the team. I went from being an aspiring photographer to working for National Geographic, the golden square in a matter of months. It was a crazy transition in my life.

20 years from now, what do you want to be remembered for?

20 years from now I wanted to be remembered as the guy who worked doing what he loved to do and inspired other people to follow that same path whatever that might be.
