Cody Barnhill

This guy is way too chill

Cody has an abundance of natural talent; not only does he rip on skis but he’s also a nasty bike rider. We often see him Tall Bike Jousting around Salt Lake City and put our money on him winning the Tour de France someday. Cody is a vegan and he’s still stronger than you. Originally from Alaska, Cody is a natural at throwing gigantic cork 3s/7s off natural features first try. He now resides in Sun Valley and loves to bask in the sunshine.

Q&A

1.) You are a master of design. Where do you get your inspiration?

Mostly from need. I feel that if a piece of gear is properly designed it will do exactly what it's supposed to, almost without even noticing it. If there's a trick or a learning curve just to use something you just bought it had better be a very complex tool, otherwise I think it could be better designed.

2.) What have been some of your toughest challenges this past season? How did you overcome them?

This past season the toughest thing really was deciding what the next step is. After starring in Valhalla I seriously considered just retiring from the ski industry altogether, but after a lot of thought I decided there was still a lot of work to do in the design realm, hence my signing on with Dynafit as a designer/athlete.

3.) What do you prefer, park or backcountry? Why?

Backcountry. I love park too, but the peace and solitude of the winter mountains are what make it worth the work for me.

4.) Favorite Discrete product?

Ooh, that's a hard call because you've always got to dress to the occasion, but I love the Vaston beanie, the Augend snapback, and the Bernie hoodie.

5.) Who are some of your favorite people to follow on Instagram?

Discrete, naturally. Brodie (leven) always has some interesting things going on. Folk magazine is a good one. And Eric (hjorleifson) he doesn't post a lot, but it's always something good.

6.)When and where did you learn to ski? Who did you learn from?

I learned in Alaska when I was about four or so. My dad took me originally, but I learned quickly, and my parents got me into lessons at Alyeska, then ski racing as soon as I was old enough.

7.) Which athletes did you admire most growing up, and who do you look up to now?

Growing up it was Tommy Moe pretty much, then Seth Morrison and J.P. Auclair, and that's pretty much stuck. There are a lot of people I think are amazing, both as people and athletes, so this is probably the hardest question yet...

8.) Sponsors?

Discrete, Smith optics/helmets, Dynafit, Backcountry.com, hard work and summer jobs.
