this girl is wayyyy too gnarly

Born and raised in Upcountry Maui, Camila didn’t actually come into contact with snow until her family moved to Bend, OR. Fast forward some years and you will catch Camila shredding at Snowbird (where she has been for almost 10 seasons). In 2012 she committed to all three stops of The North Face Masters and fell in love with the tour and the people who participate in it. This upcoming season, watch as she attempts to make her way onto the FWT in hopes of competing on the big stage in Europe. Camila is new to the team but she screams #rockdiscrete.

Q&A

1.) When was your 'breakout year' and how did it happen?

Don't feel like I've quite “broke out” just yet. But 2014 has definitely been my best season to date. I had three of my best competition runs this past year and top two personal best finishes and scores in Big Sky. I'm also stoked that I finished 2nd overall for Region 2 (Americas) one spot away from qualifying for the Freeride World Tour. Big mountain competitions are soooo very challenging for me and I feel like I'm just starting to figure out visual inspection both with selection and proper execution of my comp line (aka not get lost). The last season was also productive with respect to progressing my overall riding style. I'm looking forward to taking what I've worked on and building on it next year. Riders with strong big mountain freestyle skills are the ones I admire the most so I aim to progress in that direction. Go big and look good while doing it is my overall goal.

2.) What have been some of your toughest challenges this past season? How did you overcome them?

I tore my meniscus the second week of the season and was out for over a month. Luckily I was able to heal without surgery and once I was back on my snowboard it only took me a couple weeks to get full strength and confidence back.

3.) If you weren't a professional skier, what would you be doing?

I'm far from professional anything so I can't really answer this question. If I wasn't a snowboard bum I'd probably be a surf bum.

4.) Favorite Discrete product?

Those female flannels doe....

5.) Who are some of your favorite people to follow on Instagram?

Rachael Burks, Drew Tabke, Griffin Post, Liz Daley, Splurt, FatJewish

6.) When and where did you learn to snowboard? Who did you learn from?

I was born and raised on Maui and didn't experience snow firsthand until I moved to Bend, Oregon when I was in high school. I dabbled my first couple winters but didn't really get into it until buying my first season pass for $199 to Mt. Bachelor my senior year. As soon as money wasn't an issue for day tix and I could ride as much as I wanted I was completely hooked. I pretty much failed out of high school as a result.... it's okay, I made up for it with two bachelor degrees. Maybe one day I'll get around to using them.

7.) Which athletes did you admire most growing up, and who do you look up to now?

I grew up knowing nothing about snowboarding or it's athletes. Some of my favorite contemporary shredders old and new to the scene are Jamie Lynn, Victoria Jealous, Terje, Sammy Luebke, Xavier de la Rue, Ralph Backstrom, Eric Robinson, Drew Tabke, Rachael Burks

8.) Sponsors?

Just got on with Alta Snowboard.
